light from many lamps
I have to say I did not expect what this cd turned out to be; it took me a little while to overcome the initial confusion and grow to appreciate this disk.
caul is a neo-classical project of brett smith. poetic, gentle themes of noble sadness and beauty evolve throughout the album, enveloping you with soft strings and calm melodies slowly evolving into piano passages. the melodies are simple and number of instruments used is kept to minimum, winning the heart of the listener with genuine grace and purity rather than dazzling with splendor and richness. choir introductions on some of the tracks adds range and light to bleak melodies. it is amazing how the sound is kept so clean and fresh, without slipping into the uneasy dark desolation or gloomy despair.
"light from many lamps" turned out to be a nice change from my usual listening patterns, reminding me of protagonist or raison d'etre.
