carry me
finally, after several years since last full-length cd (not counting remixes, re-releases, etc) the legend is back. at some point during those years claus gradually became an icon that in absence of any new releases was used merely for comparisons and setting the standards. "carry me" could be taken as an attempt to re-enter the scene plagued by influences from other genres, using the "revamped" version of old leaether strip. six mixes in addition to the original track might seem quite modest in comparison with two-disc monster that was "totmacher" or equally massive "headhunter 2000", but I still regard it as quite an overkill. considering all those years that claus has been silent for, we could expect something more than just one track.
original version of "carry me" does remind me the best elements off the only leaether strip disc I ever fully enjoyed - "legacy of hate and lust". the familiar sequencing, the chorus and the vocals possess the melancholy and appeal that made "legacy of hate and lust" an excellent release. all of the above are mixed in danceable graceful melody. the track is a nice dark melodic electro that might be blamed as being "dated" by some, but probably is just a tribute to the trademark leaether strip sound, that simply should not go away.
the choice of the remixes was quite surprising at first (especially if compared with lineup on :w: and front242 mentioned above), but after the first listen it starts to make sense. I regard "carry me" as an attempt to keep the sound of the band intact and position leaether strip within dark electro genre.
remixes are very well-done and present a lot of diversity. slightly altered techno-influenced "schmidt mix", rhythmic repetitive noise of "straight to hell" mix; version by testube should be especially mentioned (their excellent "bioplaza" released last year probably was the reason that allowed them to become one of the few remixing bands on this cd) for giving a different feel to the track - more spacey and lighter sound that did not lose any of its melodic elements, but gained diversity and something that for the lack of better word could be called "modern feel".
funkiness of "phat" mix cannot be overlooked as well. random bleeps, noises are mixed with melodic elements and cut-up vocal samples. experimental and disjointed edge added to the track seems to benefit it a lot. "phoenix mix" is a treat for the trance-addicts with its light dancy sound and simplified percussion-oriented structure, the vocals take some time to get used to here.
you should probably get this disc not for the original track, but for the great remixes that it contains. as long as you do not expect this to be the a revelation and new beginning of leaether strip, you should enjoy this disc quite a lot.
