mate m (2000)

at first this little vinyl might appear as typical quality idm release, with broken stuttering percussion and distant strings. it is melodic, catchy and pleasant for anyone with the ear for those things.

only a couple of listens later you realize how amazing this release really is, for it combines heavy broken drum&bass percussion, bordering on breakcore, with most fragile idm textures. most of the record is tough, fast-paced technoid percussion that has depth and heaviness that many of the splintery, glitchy idm lacks. at the same time it is far away from renowned beat masters of dub, since it moves closer to faster, more technoid breakcore world. comparing it to recent baracuda release, that seems to employ the same tactics, I have to say I like this release al lot more, since it has more emotions, and more instantly likable percussion that definitely has more soul than cold perfection baracuda.

if you take tracks like "transpluto" or "element 115" you will see where mate m approaches broken rhythm&noise with squealing strings and distant noises. on other tracks you might recognize a familiar gabber drum pattern, or explosive rhythm&noise attack, that would be blended perfectly with what seems to be a dark idm/technoid track.

this release is definitely closer to darker technoid counterparts of hymen, or unit. its combination of heaviness, speed and emotion, as well as perfectly composed percussion textures result in memorable, catchy record that would be a shame to miss.
