Risen from the ashes of the London drum 'n bass duo Ocosi, Mothboy is the solo project of Simon Smerdon. Ocosi's death didn't phase his creativity in the slightest, and he's been keeping busy with a host of other projects. So far Mothboy is the most promising.
After a brief intro track of backwards guitar melodies, frenetic break-beats launch "From All Areas" full speed ahead with an energetic, vibrant potency. At nearly eight minutes it's the longest track on the demo, and it never loses steam. "Retexe" shows a different side to Mothboy altogether, toning down the pace from a rolling boil to a low simmer with mild percussion and a funky double bass loop.
"Stolen" steps back into a slightly more frantic realm of drumming, providing a cohesive blend of beats and melodies, while the final track, "Pelvis (Ruff Style)," lays claim to some of the more infectious percussion on the disc. Jazzy, sampled instruments are set to a slow-moving polyrhythmic backdrop.
At just under a half-hour this demo is a bit of a tease, but with all the prospective label interest the project has been earning a full-length debut shouldn't be far away.
