sleepwalk (2001)

this sleepwalk album would probably be criticized for the same flaws exhibited on the previous release. old celtic circle feel is still intact, but at the same time there is something more underneath it that makes this album appealing nowadays. it is hard to point out those exact elements, but I think what sets it apart is professionalism of execution, when all the best elements of "old" dark electro are brought forward with intensity and energy that was so characteristic of it.

my appreciation for this disk probably could be perceived as a nostalgic tribute to dark electro days; and while a lot of it is true, there is something more. on may tracks the band seemed to transform its sound to a lot more danceable and "modern" side of dark electro, moving really close to the likes of in strict confidence or even hocico. vocal processing (that ranges from distorted angry vocals to pleasantly vocoded), sound samples, familiar composition - all those elements would comfort any nostalgic soul out there, at the same time constant presence of melody, nice use of strings and overall diversity of sound gives this album more timeless appeal.

"spirits from the inside" in its entirety probably would not be able to withstand competition with current dark electro artists, but there are many tracks on it that are up to par and at the same time display a lot of old vigor and strength that is dear to so many people. listening to last blutengel (and similar dark electropop material) lately, it is pleasant to see that sleepwalk is serious about its music, remaining faithful to the genre and introduces a many new elements retaining overall old school appeal.
