engine works inc

sona eact (2000)

if you think about it, sona eact has the ultimate industrial approach to music. intentionally monotonous, heavily distorted, violently abrasive, completely mechanized, inhuman and fast-paced it represents the essence of industrial music as it was first thought of when it was introduced over 20 years ago.

“engine works inc” is the second album for the band that consists of patrick stevens of hyphoskull’s fame with help of mieke m. it seems to be a progression of the ideas by sonar after patrick parted with he band few years ago.

streamlined sound of sona eact is something that has to be listened to very loud and on the set of good speakers to be completely immersed in distorted heaviness and get hypnotized by crushing beats that break through with constant intensity. crunchy, explosive rhythms are built around abrasive loops and at times quite dense electronics. all the sounds are polished and cleaned up to deliver the essence of mechanized intensity.

by far this is my favorite project of patrick stevens, where his ideas about rhythms, abrasiveness and mechanized sounds seem to be expressed most completely.

I found that the best way to listen to this album is just a few songs at a time, although strangely enough even after you listen to the whole album, it doesn’t become overly boring or monotonous due to multiple crashes, explosions and variations built on top of persistent rhythms. sona eact is a project that focuses on few aspects of technoid sounds and that way provides the most complete and accurate rendering of musician’s ideas.
