after listening to “shocking hobby over and over again I simply had to go back and get my hands on previous material by jochem paap. the most recent and easily accessible release that I got was “ieee mitten menu,” showcasing more “funky” side of this project.

“nutt mix” of the title track starts out quite straightforward with breakbeats reminding me of… prodigy (a comparison that immediately popped up in my mind and refused to go away). however by the middle of the track we are treated with nicely placed strings and unexpected developments that hint overpowering heaviness of “shocking hobby.” then the steady breakbeats take over and the track continues undisturbed. next is “mint mix” that is a bit more varied and takes a cautious step towards more chaotic and abrasive sound. “fart essen” is a punchy track that has trademark “broken” sound with breakbeats stumbling and collapsing, spinning and clashing, unexpectedly exploding and smashing against the listener.

this short single is not nearly as dark and intense as “shocking hobby”; while traces of the latter could be heard in sudden turns and clashes, this cd is a lot calmer and more “neutral,” displaying destructive potential of the artist only for a brief moment after which well-behaved pace resumes. it is a definitely a punch in the face for a conventional techno listener that would be lured into the track only to be smashed by a sudden brief attack of overloaded percussion mayhem that leaves him wondering if it really happened.
