go plastic

I have always followed squarepusher from some distance, being familiar with his back catalogue, I have never been able to get into the music completely. since I am planning to attend squarepusher show in august, I decided to write a few words about “go plastic” especially since this album is a lot better than earlier efforts by squarepusher.

of course, you probably have already heard “red hot car” track that is a wonderful mix of funky melody, disjointed breakbeats, nice basslines. funky as hell, funny and twisted it reminds me of disarranged version of “windowlicker” by aphex twin. this song is dangerously addictive, and so far I could not find a single person that could resist its twisted funky charm.

the rest of the album goes along the lines of high-tech twisted percussion – complex collapsing broken breakbeats, fast-paced short drum&bass attacks, screeching noises, plenty of basslines (a much needed addition adding some depth to the album) and lots of *attitude* manifesting itself in funky nosies, samples, and short melodic passages. I was very pleased to hear a lot of bass and heavier percussion elements that nicely compliments high-paced funkiness.

overall, this album is more of a breakbeat science than anything else, but it stands above any of the peers in the genre not only because of the outstanding technical wizardry offering countless sonic wonders, but also it has a distinct funk (and “fun”) attitude that makes all that sonic noodling a lot more purposeful. get a good set of headphones, crank up your bass and enjoy!
