four ways of saying h30
I am not very familiar with material of hafler trio that gained its notoriety in early 80s by producing unique and daring material. therefore my perspective on this release will be completely based on the material presented, without references to original material by hafler trio. I believe that all projects presented here used hafler trio's work merely as inspiration to their free-form exploration of sound manipulation, as opposed to usual methods of presenting cover versions.
starting out with aube's "clarity bounce" you get an impression of what the album sounds like. as usual with aube's work following the principles of musique concrete, glass was the instrument of choice for this track. abrasive scratching and vibrating pulses break into a crescendo that is followed by minimal screeches and clicks. stacatto of breaking sounds are intertwined with rattling, breaking noises. the track is perceived as a an exercise in sound manipulation where you are treated with unusual sonic structures.
chicago-based lilith is next; the band gained recognition after several releases on sub rosa; it's interpretation of hafler trio deals with long modulated frequencies, backed by bass; tweaked amplified noises swirl and grow, followed by corroded flowing pulses and deep sub-bass.
pal is manipulating samples of original hafler trio work, resulting in heaviest and most disorganized composition on this album. voice samples are interrupted by sudden noise outbursts and feedback jammed with amplified frequencies. if the band's name wasn't on the cd sleeve, I would've never imagined it was pal that created this track.
mark spybey keeps within the boundaries established by propeller and contributes a composition where dark drones are contrasted with pure sax lines, gentle modulated drops and slow dreamy sweeps.
hidden track 5 was never mentioned on the cd sleeve (could it be dimitri himself?) and is a collection of hostile abrasive scratches, noises, frequencies, humming bass and harsh breaks. repetitive sparse elements that come and go after exposing themselves for a few moments.
the importance of this release is in its conceptual atmosphere, where music is a media that allows the bands to convey their ideals and statements. hafler trio is a cause of this message, and it's interesting to see how it became an experiment in a free flow of energy inspired by the original output by the trio. this is the first release by hushush, and a very strong statement from this new label, attracting big names in the scene, quickly establishing itself within the experimental music genre.
