maschinenfest

v/a (1999)
anton · November 30, 1999

this is the compilation that was released to commemorate recent maschinenfest festival that took place at the end of october 1999 in aachen. the bands that are presented on this limited (602 copies) cd performed live during this two-day event. it is, of course, a weak substitute for the real concert, but nevertheless gives you an idea of what those bands sounded like.

the first part of the cd is quite bleak and uninteresting, featuring tracks from morgenstern ("horny being" - dark, bass-heavy ambient), salt ("rewasp" - swirling mass of insect-sounding creepy noise backed with brooding bass), zymosiz ("hive" - very simple and straightforward percussion).

however, the rest of the cd is simply amazing: starting with "kraterh" by ah cama-sotz - the track that came as a surprise for me - very aggressive and heavy, filled with excellent percussion and subtile noises, definitely not the "usual" ah cama-sotz sound. the fun continues with very ambient and chaotic "shipwrecked" done by p.a.l vs. ah cama-sotz.

imminent starvation presents "hautec" that should not disappoint any fans of this band. ms gentur continues with "lily" in its usual vein of crunchy, jumpy structured rhythm'n'noise. the disk is concluded with synapscape's "once again you die", hypnoskull vs. tunnel's "damn shit (2nd version)"; noisex presents "under pressure (instrumental)" off "1920.00" and winterkälte finishes the cd with excellent live version of "warm up".
